If your group text has been a little quiet lately, if girls' night has started to feel like the same dinner at the same restaurant, or if you are just looking for something genuinely fun to do with the women in your life, I want to tell you about mahjong.
I know what you might be thinking. Is that not the game my grandmother played? Is it not really complicated? Do I need a lot of people?
I had every one of those thoughts too. And then I sat down at a table, learned how to play, and completely changed my mind. Four years later, mahjong is not just a game I love. It is the reason I gather more, laugh more, and have a standing excuse to see my favorite people on a regular basis.
Here are five reasons it might do the same for you.
1. It gives your friend group a reason to show up consistently.
One of the hardest things about adult friendships is that they require scheduling. Gone are the days of just showing up at someone's door. Now everything needs a reason, a date, and at least two weeks' notice.
Mahjong gives you the reason.
When you and your friends all know how to play, you do not need to plan an elaborate outing or come up with something new every time. You just say "mahj night, my place, Saturday at seven" and people actually come. It becomes a ritual. A standing invitation. Something everyone looks forward to because it is fun, familiar, and genuinely relaxing in a way that a loud restaurant just is not.
Several of the women who have come through my classes now have weekly game nights that have been going strong for over a year. That did not happen because they planned it to death. It happened because they had a game worth gathering around.
2. It is fun for everyone at the table.
There is something about the combination of strategy and luck in mahjong that keeps it interesting for every single person sitting down. The more experienced players love the strategy.
The newer players love that luck can absolutely pull off a win on any given hand. It levels the playing field just enough to keep things exciting without taking anything away from the players who have been at it longer.
And once the game clicks, it really clicks. I have watched women go from completely overwhelmed to completely obsessed, and that moment of things finally falling into place is one of my absolute favorite things to witness.
I have watched brand new players win on some of their very first hands. The shriek that follows is genuinely one of my favorite sounds.
3. The social energy around a mahjong table is unlike anything else.
There is something about sitting across from people, passing tiles, reading each other's discards, and trying very hard not to give anything away that creates a specific kind of energy. It is playful. A little competitive. Full of commentary.
People talk around a mahjong table. They tease each other. They celebrate loudly and groan dramatically. They tell stories between hands and forget what they were saying when someone calls a tile. It is lively in the best way, not loud and chaotic, but engaged and alive.
If you have ever been to a dinner party where half the table ends up on their phones by nine o'clock, you know how rare it is to find something that holds a room. Mahjong holds a room.
4. It is the perfect excuse to host.
I am a hostess at heart, and mahjong gave me an entirely new reason to set a beautiful table, put together a gorgeous spread, and invite people over for an evening that actually has a purpose.
There is something about a mahjong night that feels elevated without being fussy. You do not need a theme or a plan. You just need good company, something to snack on, and tiles on the table. The game does the rest.
And for anyone who loves hosting but sometimes struggles with the "what are we actually doing" question, mahjong answers that completely. It is the activity and the atmosphere all in one.
5. It builds a community you did not know you needed.
This one might be the most unexpected benefit of all, but I have watched it happen over and over again.
Women come to a mahjong class not knowing anyone else in the room. Two hours later they are exchanging numbers and asking when the next game is. Something about learning something new together, side by side, with a little friendly competition woven in, fast-tracks connection in a way that is hard to explain until you have experienced it.
Mahjong attracts a certain kind of woman. Someone who is a little curious, a little social, and not afraid to try something new. When you put a room full of those women together and give them a game to rally around, community forms naturally. I have seen friendships start at my tables that I know will last for years.
That is the part that gets me every time. That is the part that made me want to teach.
